Paramedicine gets national tick of approval

Monday, 22 October 2012

In a WA first, ECU’s Paramedical Science course has been given the tick of approval by the national body, which advocates on behalf of ambulance authorities.

The three year Bachelor of Science (Paramedical Science) degree was granted full accreditation by the Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA) joining just five other institutions in Australia..

The process ensures paramedicine students are receiving high quality training and education meeting the requirements of modern ambulance services in Australia and New Zealand.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox said the University welcomed the full accreditation by the CAA.

“It is further recognition of the high-quality paramedical program that we established at the University five years ago,” he said.

“We are now the only accredited paramedical science course in WA and the Northern Territory and one of just six in Australia.

“ECU’s paramedical qualifications are recognised throughout Australia and New Zealand and our graduates have found employment in this sector around the world.”

CAA Chief Executive Officer Greg Mundy said ambulance services played a vital part in Australia’s health system which depended on the high-level skills of paramedics.

“The development of these skills starts with qualifications such as these,” he said.

“Accreditation plays an important role in assuring the quality of paramedic programs being provided by the higher education sector and we are very proud of the relationships the CAA is building with universities such as Edith Cowan University.

“The education of the next generation of paramedics is vitally important to our members who are responsible for ambulance service delivery in each State and Territory in Australia and in New Zealand.”
