Gaining a university degree has been a lifelong ambition for Australind resident Jean Evans.
It’s a goal she will achieve when she graduates with a Bachelor in Creative Industries from ECU’s South West Campus this month.
A South West resident for much of her life, Jean, 59, has worked in Bunbury and volunteered her time with organisations such as Cancer Foundation South West Support Centre and Saint John of God Hospital. Yet throughout her career, her interest in education never left her mind.
“I have lived in the area for 26 years, only a 20 minute drive from the ECU campus,” Jean said.
“The desire to learn had been niggling at me for some time and I knew that I would always regret it if we moved away and the option was no longer available.”
Her time at ECU was an eye-opening experience, introducing her to a world of film, literature and writing.
“My favourite Communication and Culture unit was Cultural Representation in Australian film. During that semester I became somewhat addicted to film, and attended the local cinema once, often twice, a week – where I also discovered a love of membership discount cards!” she said.
The graduation ceremony will be particularly special for Jean, who will receive the Faculty Medal, which is presented to the undergraduate with the highest quality work across the faculty, and the WA Plantation Resources (WAPRES) Prize which is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from the Bachelor of Creative Industries course.
“I am very grateful - winning both awards is most definitely a highlight of my time at university,” Jean said.
Following her graduation, Jean is considering both travel and further volunteer work. And she hasn’t ruled out returning to university to complete her honours.
But for now this inspiring student is happy to graduate with such an outstanding achievement.
“Through all the blood, sweat and tears the real achievement is knowing that I finally got there.”
She will join over 140 students who will celebrate their graduation in front of family and friends at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on Saturday, 25 February.
Prior to the graduation ceremony students will parade down the main street to celebrate their achievements with the local community.
