Energy Management

Consuming energy derived from fossil fuels (coal and natural gas) contributes directly to the problem of global climate change by producing greenhouse gases that effectively prevent the sun’s radiation from escaping back into space.

ECU acknowledges that as a large organisation it is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and strives to reduce or offset our total emissions. The implementation of our energy management program aims to conserve all forms of energy by eliminating waste and encouraging efficient use.

Some of our initiatives so far have included:

  • Movement sensors and dimming system for office lighting
  • Tri-phosphor globes (low maintenance and energy efficient) are used in most buildings
  • Building design makes use of natural lighting as much as possible

We also purchase a percentage of our power through Western Power’s Earth-friendly initiative. For more information on the Earth Friendly program, click here

For more on our energy-saving programs at ECU, please see:

  • Green Office Program - this program focuses on encouraging and rewarding sustainable behaviour in our offices. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, visit the webpage or email the Environment Officer.
  • ENERGY STAR - ECU preferentially buys ENERGY STAR certified or similar products.
  • Reduce Screensaver Use - screensavers do not save power- in fact they can use more than you would when word processing! Read on to find out more.

ECU has offset the fuel emissions of 73 vehicles through the Carbon Neutral Program

You too can offset your own vehicle, plane travel or even electricty emissions through Carbon Neutral. For more information see their handy emissions calculator.
