Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox launches Green Office Program

Earlier this week, Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox launched the new Green Office Program with a lake-side ceremony at ECU’s Joondalup Campus.

The Green Office Program aims to increase staff awareness and education on the environmental impacts of our daily work practices, and to encourage and facilitate environmentally responsible alternatives.

A number of Green Officers have nominated themselves to help promote the Green Office Program and encourage sustainable practises across the University. The full list of Green Officers is available online.

Professor Cox encouraged Green Officers to try to reduce the use of heating and cooling systems in their work areas, and to help educate fellow staff and students about the importance of recycling.

“Thank you to all our Green Officers who have volunteered to be part of the ECU Green Office team,” he said.

“All ECU staff will be involved with the Green Office Program to ensure that our culture at ECU becomes one where we all think about the environmental impact we have every time we print something or every time we turn on our computer or every time we purchase a product.”

The Green Office Program is coordinated by Belinda O’Brien, Environmental Coordinator, and Trena Ward, Environment Officer. For more information about the Green Office Program, visit the Green Office page on this website.

ECU Wins the 2009 Premiers Award for “Managing the Environment”

ECU strives to be sustainable in all of its activities and is on a journey of continuous improvement. The University is committed to developing a heightened awareness within its staff, students and the wider community of a sense of place and value for the environment and each other.  ECU is creating a sustainable university community and a culture of ‘healthy you, healthy environment’.

A strategic priority within the ECU Strategic Plan is building organisational sustainability and ECU was one of the earliest Universities to appoint an environment committee to inform and advise on environmental related issues.
ECU is a leader in the teaching and learning of sustainability where there is strong synergy between sustainability and the discipline.  ECU’s goal is to build its research enterprise and generate enhanced outcomes in selected areas of excellence, particularly those with the potential for high social, economic, environmental and cultural impact.

ECU selected the Global Reporting Initiative as its reference framework to manage sustainability. Under this framework the University manages seven environmental programs in water, waste, energy, travel, biodiversity, procurement and the delivery of education. The university also operates five social sustainable programs being sustainability in the curriculum and research, OSH and wellness, professional development of ECU staff, diversity and equal opportunity and engagement.

This comprehensive approach taken by the University towards sustainability has been subject to an independent evaluation.  The evaluation highlighted a number of strengths and opportunities to the University and has resulted in the implementation of the Sustainable Communities Action Plan to drive further continuous improvement.

Green Office Program 2010

Are you interested in being a Green Officer at ECU?  We are now calling for expressions of interest from all ECU staff who care about the environment and would like to be involved with ‘greening’ our University.

The Green Office Program will begin in 2010.  There will be training courses offered in the areas of energy, water, transport, natural diversity and recycling, plus occasional field trips will be held throughout the year.

We will run events to help us increase our own knowledge of the environment including environmental movies, guest speakers, competitions and so much more. It will be a fun program all we ask is that you put your hand up to be a part of the team in ‘greening’ ECU in whatever way you can.

Please forward this onto your colleagues so that we get the word out to one and all.

Attached is a link to the website with an expression of interest to be completed and a fact and answer sheet.

Bunbury Campus Spring Litter Clean-up

On Thursday the 17th of September the South West Biodiversity Working Group hosted a Perimeter Litter Pickup at the Bunbury Campus. Staff and Student helpers had a sausage sizzle before embarking on a trek around the campus to clean up the fringing campus bushland . Despite the wet weather the litter pick-up was a great success collecting 101.2 kg of waste over a two hour period. The group found all sorts of rubbish from glass, paper and plastic to steering wheels and household items.

Bunbury Bushwalk

On June 11th, 2009 the Biodiversity Working Group lead a bushwalk open to all staff around the Bunbury Campus.  The walk was lead by two members of the community, Bernard Bishoff and Peter Murphy, both providing a different perspective of the bushland.  Bernard was able to share his knowledge with regards to geography, geology and habitat protection, while Peter had experience with plant and animal species.   The rain held off just long enough for the group to learn some interesting facts about this piece of south-west bushland and take some great photo’s.
The Bunbury bushland has 10 different vegetation types (See Map below).  Tuart, Jarrah, Marri and Banksia are the main trees that you will find with small Peppermint Trees and Acacias.  The two areas that the group passed through on the walk where:

  1. Tuart Open Woodland over Jarrah/ Marri/ Banksia attenuata/ Peppermint Low Woodland
  2. Tuart/ Marri Open Woodland over Peppermint/ Jarrah/ Marri/ Banksia attenuata Low Open Forest.

Biodiversity Group and staff members set off on a bushwalk through ECU South- West Bushland.

To see the different vegetation types found on the South West Campus go to the Flora and Fauna page of ECO ECU (link on the left). We also came across a kangaroo or two and there was evidence that the cockatoo’s had been feasting on some of the nuts from various plants.

1 July – 31 August Sprinkler Bans

Each year Perth water supplies dry up over the Summer period and this year is no exception, our dams are currently at 34% full ( as of June 2009).

To stop people watering gardens over Winter the Water Corporation has enforced a total ban on all sprinkler systems in and around Perth. ECU is included in this sprinkler ban and therefore our gardens will not be watered over the Winter months.

Earth Day Expo brings Local Schools to ECU

More than 750 primary school students came to ECU last week to take part in the Earth Day Expo hosted by the School of Education.

Earth Day is celebrated globally on 22 April each year to promote education and awareness of environmental issues. As Earth Day falls during school holidays this year, ECU’s Earth Day Expo was held on Thursday, 2 April at Joondalup and Friday, 3 April at Mount Lawley.

This was the first time the Expo was held at ECU Joondalup following the success of events held at Mount Lawley over the last few years.

Children in Years One to Seven from 14 Perth schools participated in a range of hands-on environmental education activities presented by organisations including Environment House, the Water Corporation, the Perth Hills National Parks Centre, ECU’s School of Natural Science and many others.

Event organiser, Dr Jennifer Pearson said the event was a great success and the children went away from the day with a new awareness and curiosity about the natural environment.

Children take home a new awareness of sustainable living that we hope they will share with their families,” she said.

Professor Greg Robson, Head of the School of Education, said the event also acknowledges ECU’s partner schools that support Education students during their professional practice.

Our partner schools are very supportive of ECU’s workplace learning program and the Earth Day Expo is one way we can thank the schools that host our pre-service teachers,” he said.
