PD green their operations
The Professional Development team have recently implemented a new initiative to save both time and money while also delivering significant benefit to the environment. PD@ECU will now provide electronic copies of all training manuals rather than printing them out. Participants may the either access the manuals on their own laptops or print only the pages that they require on the day.
This initiative also helps with online filing of training records for participants, where course and personal notes can be filed electronically for future reference.
Personal printers pose health risks
A recent study by the Queensland University of Technology has revealed that having a personal printer on your desk can impact your health, as well as the environment.
An investigation of dozens of laser printers revealed that almost 30 per cent emit potentially dangerous levels of tiny particles (tomer-like material) into the air. These ultra-fine particles are said to be similar to inhaling cigarette smoke in the damage that they can do to human lungs.
Personal laser printers also have a greater environmental impact than larger multi-function devices through the amount of toner, paper and energy they use. Larger machines also negate the need for several separate machines to fax, scan, print and copy, thus further reducing energy and toner needs as well as running costs.
