ECUCarpool has arrived

ECU Environmental Services has introduced a new online carpool matching service for staff and students.

The benefits of the initiative include cost sharing (for parking, fuel etc), reduced congestion and more available parking on campus. Plus, it’s a greener way to travel, with fewer cars on the road creating fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

The site is useful for those who drive as well as those who don’t. You are able to register trips as either a driver or passenger. Whether you choose to make carpooling permanently part of your travel plans or would just like to use the service for the odd one-off journey, the sophisticated software available through this service will allow you to find a match without giving any personal details until you wish to exchange them. You can even choose from a range of matches depending upon the location of your potential carpool partner along your intended route.

For best results, log your journeys early (a few days before you want to travel) and ensure that your search criteria are sufficiently wide enough to allow you some choice in matches. Remember to check your email regularly when waiting for a match.

Al Gore's Climate Presentation

Speakers trained by Al Gore as part of the Australian Conservation Foundation's Climate Project are set to come to ECU this February to deliver his climate change presentation from "An Inconvenient Truth" to interested staff and students. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the science behind climate change, what is myth and fact, and what you can do to help.

Only three sessions are to be held initially of 20 people each, so if you would like to attend one of these, please RSVP to reserve your place at a particular session. Additional sessions may be booked depending upon initial take-up.

Go to www.ecu.edu.au/fas/ecoecu/news for dates, times and locations.

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on the 2 of February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971 and is an opportunity to consider the effects our use of water has on wetland environments.

World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997. Since this time government agencies, non-government organisations and community groups have celebrated World Wetlands Day by undertaking actions to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits and promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
You can get involved in wetland conservation yourself. For ideas, visit the Department of Environment and Heritage website.

Help wanted for Orientation

Student Orientation is the busiest time of year for EcoECU, and we need your help handing out fliers and helping students register for the ECUCarpool.

If you are interested in environmental issues and would like to help out by spreading the word about the initiatives that EcoECU run, please email environment@ecu.edu.au to register your interest.
