Do you know who the Green Officer is in your building?

The ECU Green Office Program promotes cultural change within the University and encourages staff to play their part in environmental sustainability. The program operates across all Monash campuses, departments, schools, institutes and centres in Victoria.

A network of Green Office Representatives are environmental ambassadors within their offices, creating positive change through initiatives such as establishing recycling programs and reducing paper usage. Representatives volunteer their time and are the heart of the Green Office Program, which relies heavily on their continued dedication and enthusiasm. A big thank you to all our current Reps and a warm invitation to anyone wishing to get involved!

In December 2009 the program was launched and Feb 12th say the first Green Office introductory workshop.  For further info please refer to the Green Office site at:

Waste Audit Results 2009

The audit clearly illustrated that there is a large amount of recyclable waste going to landfill. From external on-grounds general waste bins 36.28% of the waste was found to be recyclable and within ECU buildings 50.20% was found to be recyclable materials.

One of the things we are doing to address waste at ECU, is to install yellow top recycling bins around each campus.  So make sure to look out for the “recycling” label (as in the picture) on our new bins in the coming weeks.

In order to better understand the composition of ECU’s waste, and to ensure that we are monitoring whether our systems are working, Environment Services conducted a waste audit at all three ECU campus for 2009. You can find the Audit Report at: http://www.ecu.edu.au/fas/EcoECU/recycling.php

2010 - Year of Biodiversity

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity IYB with the slogan "biodiversity is life" as a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives.

The latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ showed that:

  • 22 percent of all known mammals;
  • 30 percent of all known amphibians;
  •  12 percent of all known birds;
  •  28 percent of reptiles;
  •  37 percent of freshwater fish species;
  •  70 percent of plants;
  •  35 percent of invertebrates;

assessed so far, are under threat. Some estimates suggest that the current global rate of species extinction due to human activity is about 1000 times the natural rate of loss.
