Green Travel Plan Workshop
Facilities and Services are developing a Green Travel Plan (GTP), aimed at reducing the number of car trips made to the University and facilitating staff and students to walk, cycle and take public transport instead.
Next month Environmental Services will be hosting a workshop where staff and students will have the opportunity to input into the development of strategies to reduce car trips to and from ECU and facilitate the use of sustainable forms of transport.
Facilitator: Mary Del Casale
When: 12.30-4.30pm Monday October 1st 2007
Where: Room 1.2107 Joondalup
RSVP: environment@ecu.edu.au or 6304 2232 by Monday 24th September.
Please arrive for a prompt 12.30pm start. Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
Business and Law Waste Less
The Business and Law building at Joondalup campus has recently had a green face-lift in the form of over 160 mini bins. These small desk-top bins replace the general rubbish bin under the desk and minimise the amount of recyclables (particularly paper) that are sent to landfill.
The Mini Bin Recycling Program has been operating in Building 1 since August 2006 and has resulted in a reduction of paper by weight of 8% and a reduction of 27.6% as a proportion of total waste to landfill.
These results show that by making some very simple modifications to the way we work, staff at ECU can make a significant difference to the environment!
Yellagonga Community Workshop
The Yellagonga Regional Park comprises of 1400 hectares containing an important wetland system representing a broad range of native flora and fauna. Land uses within the Yellagonga Catchment influence the health of the system, in particular the quantity and quality of the water entering the wetland.
The City of Wanneroo and the City of Joondalup are hosting a community forum to develop ways to improve the health of the park. If you have an interest in wetlands or natural resource management, this is your opportunity to actively get involved in the management of this special place.
When: 6.00-8.15pm Thursday September 20th 2007
Where: Bridgeleigh Reception Centre, 198 Mary Street, Wanneroo
RSVP: Essential as seats are limited. Ph: 9405 5000.
Water Re-use a Reality
In the face of Western Australia's drying climate, ECU is doing its bit to reduce its use of our precious groundwater and reuse water on site.
Earlier this year Facilities and Services received a Commonwealth grant to pump some of water from the Joondalup campus’ cooling towers into the artificial lake. The lake water is used for watering the University grounds and much of it is supplied from underground bores.
It is estimated that up to 3 million litres of water will flow to the lake from the cooling towers each year, saving an equivalent amount of groundwater from having to be pumped.
This initiative is just one way that ECU is conserving water. For more information visit the Environmental Services website.
