Environmentally Preferred Products Program
Until recently, the environmentally friendly product was often more expensive and not quite up to the same standard as its ordinary counterpart. However, technological advances in recent years have meant that standards have improved rapidly, and quality and prices are now comparable, with prices often cheaper for the ‘green’ option.
Currently the purchase of environmentally friendly products at ECU makes up about 10% of our total purchases. However we are aiming to increase this figure significantly. This is where YOU can help. This year EcoECU will launch a program which aims to educate purchasers on the reasons why we should be buying environmentally friendly office supplies and equipment and how to do this.

5 things to think about before you buy
- Think of longevity, reusability and recyclability when buying equipment such as printers, scanners and photocopiers. Multifunction devices are far more efficient that single use devices such as laser or bubblejet printers.
- How was the product manufactured? Could you buy something that does the same job but that carries less of an environmental impact?
- Does it contain harmful chemicals or toxins? Many office products contain chemicals that are quite toxic and that can leach into our waterways once dumped into landfill.
- Is it made of recycled material? Buying recycled helps reduce your own environmental impacts as well as encouraging suppliers to supply recycled products
- Do you really need it? The best way of conserving our natural resources is not to use them in the first place!
