Waste and Recycling

The generation of waste and consumption of natural resources have significant impacts on our environment. It is possible to reduce this impact by ‘closing the loop’ meaning that products are recycled or reused rather than being dumped, both reducing the need for more of the same product to be produced and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

ECU Recycling Program

Paper Recycling

To order additional desk side boxes or to request large recycling bins contact the Maintenance Call Centre on 5554.

For any other ECU recycling-related matters, please contact please contact us

Our paper recycling program is provided by Western Recycling through AMCOR. Paper is collected from BLUE or GREEN sulo bins situated in the communal areas of buildings, at least one on each floor.

Paper recycling bins are emptied once a week at Mount Lawley and Churchlands and fortnightly at Joondalup campus. These bins accept all types of paper, including:

  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Coloured paper
  • Brochures and card material
  • Phone books
  • White office paper

Desk-side paper recycling boxes should be used for all your paper waste and be emptied into the blue or green bins for collection when full. NOTE: The cleaners will not empty these bins. It is the responsibility of the office occupant to empty your office bin into the blue paper recycling bins in the corridors or photocopy rooms.

The Desk Side Paper Box:
For convenient desk side paper recycling, every office and desk is supplied with a WHITE cardboard box that accepts all forms of mixed paper. It is the responsibility of the office occupant to empty his/her paper box into a BLUE or GREEN bin.

Copier and Printer Bins:
Paper boxes are located next to copy machines and printers. These WHITE boxes accept all forms of mixed paper and those responsible for the copier or printer should ensure that they are emptied into the BLUE or GREEN sulo bins.

Additional Recycling

Cardboard

All cardboard boxes can be recycled by breaking them down and placing them beside your waste paper bin or beside the paper recycling bins. Cleaners will pick these up only if they are flattened and place them in a separate cardboard recycling system. Please NOTE: do not put cardboard boxes into the paper recycling bins!

Fluro Tubes

ECU now recycled fluroescent tubes. The old tubes are collected and taken to a recycling depot where the glass, mercury and other metals are separated out and recycled. This initiative prevents dangerous substances such as mercury from accumulating in landfill and polluting soil, water and the food chain.

Toner and Printer Cartridges

ECU recycles empty printer and photocopier toner cartridges through our preferred suppliers; WA Toner Supplies and Toner Action.

You can recycle cartridges by exchanging them when you order cartridge replacements or refills.

Sharp toner recycling
Offices that have the new Sharp printers and copiers can recycle their toner cartridges through Sharp. Simply store the cartridges in their original packaging and notify your Sharp representative when you have a few for collection. They cannot be refilled, but are sent to Cartridge Rescue for recycling. Boxes are being arranged to aid with collection. All other cartridges should be recycled through either Toner Action or WA Toner Supplies.
