ECU's New Green Transport Plan
Facilities and Services, in consultation with the University community have developed a Green Transport Plan (2008-2010) aimed at reducing personal car use and facilitating more sustainable travel options. Reducing reliance on car travel benefits the organisation, staff, students and the broader community by:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with carbon driven transportation,
- Providing staff and students with more travel options,
- Promoting good health to University employees and students, and
- Helping to address local traffic congestion.

ECU Offsets Vehicle Fleet Emissions
Since 2006 ECU has been offsetting the carbon emissions produced from its fleet vehicles. ECU also works hard to ensure that the fleet vehicles are efficient taking into consideration both the greenhouse rating and the air pollution rating (using the Green Vehicle Guide) when purchasing ECU fleet vehicles. This work is reflected in Graph 1 where there has been a significant drop in emissions since 2006.

Graph 1: ECU Fleet Emissions History
In 2009 ECU offset its carbon emissions, which means that 2700 oil mallee trees were planted on a farm outside Beverley to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions we produced from ECU’s fleet vehicles.
Click on the link to see photos of the tree planting project and information about the site. This really shows the benefits of offsetting and how offsetting can help the environment in so many ways.

Offset your own vehicle, plane or even your electricity emissions through Carbon Neutral. For more info and to use their handy emissions calculator go to: www.carbonneutral.com.au/individuals.htm.

5 reasons why you should become Travelsmart
- Car use contributes to traffic congestion, high infrastructure costs, community fragmentation and pollution.
- Walking and cycling, even a couple of trips per week will keep you fit and healthy.
- For every litre of petrol used, 2.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide are released from a car's exhaust. Vehicle emissions are a major source of air pollution in Perth and carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are thought to be largely responsible for global warming.
- Being TravelSmart can save you money- on petrol, parking, car maintenance and that gym membership you never use!
- 4 out of 5 trips by Perth residents are made by car, most of these by the driver alone. Across Perth 50% of car trips are less than 5km!
