Water Saving Initiatives
Did you know?
ECU is expanding their waterless urinal system across the Joondalup campus.
Water-saving shower heads are installed in all student villages, saving up to 35,000 L of water per shower per year.
ECU is undertaking a water reuse project at Joondalup expected to save up to 3 million L of water each year!

ECU is aware that water is a precious resource and is committed to undertaking strategies both within buildings and on the University grounds to reduce our water consumption and to maximise water recycling.
Student Villages - ECU's Student Villages on all campuses have water saving showerheads installed to aid in the University's efforts to conserve water. As water supply is becoming a bigger issue in Perth, the University is always looking for more ways in which to save this precious resource.
If you have any suggestions or comments on how ECU can further conserve our water resources, please direct these to environment@ecu.edu.au
Water-saving tips for Uni Students
You can not only help the University reduce its own water consumption while studying on campus, but you can take these water-saving tips home with you too!
Remember: By saving water you are also saving energy- both in the heating of the water and the energy it takes to pump water from our dams to your home.
- Don’t leave the tap running while you brush your teeth. Doing this can waste 10-14 litres of our precious water!
- Remember to turn taps off tightly- a dripping tap can leak up to 4 litres of water per day. That’s 1460 litres a year!
- Take short showers. Even at your dirtiest you only need to shower for 7-10 minutes! The difference between a 7 and a 10 minute shower each day adds up, and could help save nearly 20 000 litres of water per year!
Tips for a Waterwise Workplace
- Don’t leave the tap running while you rinse and wash your lunch dishes! A tap running on full uses 15-20 litres of water in 1 minute! You can do the same job by wetting, scrubbing and then rinsing, using only 1-2 litres of precious water!
- Fix leaking taps promptly. A dripping tap can waste up to 4 litres of water a day! Report leaks to MAINTENANCE on 5554.
- Cisterns that leak constantly day and night waste an enormous amount of water! If you notice a constantly running toilet or urinal, call MAINTENANCE on 5554.
