English competency

There are minimum English competency requirements you’ll need to meet to enter our undergraduate courses. You can demonstrate this in a number of ways.

WACE courses

You must have achieved:

  • a scaled mark of at least 50, or
  • a final school letter grade of A, B, or C in two units in English, Literature or English as an additional Language/Dialect (Stage 2 or above), studied in Year 12

Certificate IV

You must have achieved:

  • a completed Certificate IV which satisfies the requirements for entry to undergraduate courses.

TEE subjects

In TEE English, English Literature and English as a second language, you must have achieved:

  • a final scaled mark of at least 50, or
  • a final school letter grade of A, B or C, studied in Year 12

Wholly School Assessed Subject

For Senior English you must have achieved:

  • a final school letter grade of A studied in Year 12.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test

  • If you sat the test before February 2010:
    you need a score of at least 145 on the Written English Test
  • If you sat the test after February 2010:
    you need a score of at least 140 on the Written English Test

Portfolio Entry English Assessment

You must have achieved a satisfactory performance as determined by our assessor.

Our minimum English competency requirements can change, depending on the course you're interested in and whether it's an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Undergraduate English requirements

Test method Minimum requirement
IELTS An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6
TOEFL Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better
TOEFL iBT Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17
GCE O Levels Grade C or better
WAUFP 50% plus pass in ELACS
Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) A scaled mark of at least 50 in either:
  • WACE English; or
  • WACE Literature; or
  • WACE English as an Additional Language/Dialect
International Baccalaureate Diploma Minimum grade 3 at higher level for an English subject, or minimum grade of 4 at standard level for an English subject
Pearson Test of English (PTE) PTE Academic 57, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement of IELTS 6.0
PTE Academic 64, with no scores less than 58 for courses with a current requirement of IELTS 6.5
University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced] Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test.
Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169.
Other Other evidence of English language proficiency may be acceptable. Please discuss with our Admissions team.

Postgraduate English requirements

Test method Minimum requirement
IELTS An overall band score of 6.5, with no individual band less than 6
TOEFL Minimum score of 573, including Test of Written English of 5.0 or better
TOEFL iBT Minimum score of 84, with no individual score less than 17
Pearson Test of English (PTE) PTE Academic 64, with no score less than 58 for postgraduate standard entry courses
University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced] Pre-2015: A score between 58 - 66 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test
Post-2015: An overall score of 176, with no individual band less than 169
Other Other evidence of English language proficiency may be acceptable. Please discuss with our Admissions team.
