Major In Japanese

Are you into Japanese manga, anime, novels, films, games, technology, cuisines or Tokyo fashion? Perhaps creators such as Miyazaki Hayao or Murakami Haruki? Find your own version of 'cool Japan' by learning the language.

Students learn all aspects of the Japanese language while concentrating on developing practical communicative competence in Japanese in this post ATAR major.

A wide range of topics including Japanese Media and Japanese Society are covered within the course structure and interactive face-to-face classroom activities are combined with Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Real-time communications with Japanese people on chat lines are also part of the major.

This unitset structure contains information about the units which comprise the course as well as the credit points required to successfully complete it.

Students in the Japanese majors learn all aspects of the Japanese language and concentrate on developing practical communicative competence in Japanese. A wide range of topics including Japanese Media and Japanese Society are covered within the course structure and interactive face to face classroom activities are combined with computer assisted language learning (CALL). You even get to have real-time communications with Japanese people on chat line as part of the course. ECU’s Japanese exchange programs also enable you to explore both modern and traditional Japan by studying at one of the exchange partner universities. The completion of ECU’s dynamic Japanese major will definitely give you better opportunities to widen your career perspectives.


The Major in Japanese from post ATAR level comprises 120 credit points, eight (8) units: no more than 30 credit points (two (2) units) at Level One and no less than 45 credit points (three (3) units) at Level Three as available.

Applicants for the advanced (post-ATAR) language majors and minors will require WACE 3A/3B, or equivalent language skills in the relevant language.

There is an additional special conditions for entry into the Japanese Majors or Minors: Native speakers of Japanese who have completed their compulsory education in Japan and/or in a Japanese educational institution overseas (i.e., six years at primary and three years at junior high school) are not eligible to enrol in a Japanese Major or Minor.
