ECU was delighted to invite our generous donors to the third annual Celebration of Giving event, which recognises their philanthropic support of our University.

In our 25th anniversary year, all of our donors to ECU have had a tremendous impact in supporting our students through Scholarships, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support Program, Broadcasting Development Fund and research.

James Thomasson, a first year acting student and recipient of a D’Arcy Slater Acting Scholarship spoke of the tremendous impact the generosity of the D’Arcy Slater has had on his University life.  For James, the scholarship has taken financial pressure off him in his first year of study, and helped him believe that he was capable of achieving great things.

Guests were also delighted to hear from Christina Slater, Board member of the D’Arcy Slater Foundation, a long term donor to WAAPA.  The D’Arcy Slater Foundation was established in memory of Christina’s late son D’Arcy.  Christina spoke of the joy the Foundation members receive from supporting WAAPA students through scholarships and the Visiting Artist’s Program.

Following a drinks reception, our donors were mesmerised by a modernised performance of A Tale of Two Cities.  This production was modernised by one of Scotland’s most gifted and imaginative Director’s Hugh Hodgart, who we are thrilled to have welcomed to WAAPA thanks to the support of the Minderoo Foundation. Hugh worked closely with our students to put a modern twist on one of Charles Dickens classics; retaining the thrill and tension of the French Revolutionary setting but merging it with a modern, East London aesthetic.

This event is ECU’s way of celebrating our donors, and reinforcing to them, the importance their giving has on helping the University to achieve its goal of providing a world class institution, and helping our students to reach their full potential.
