Description

This unit introduces dramatic works and poetry as historical and aesthetic artifacts. Students will investigate a range of political literary theories, and will develop theoretically informed close reading skills by examining literature as a concrete product of particular times and places. Students will learn to analyse texts both as documents from the past and as voices that continue to speak of desires and problems of today?s society.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse a literary text in relation to both historical and the contemporary contexts.
  2. Analyse poetic and dramatic texts, emphasizing how formal properties of literary texts contribute to meaning.
  3. Apply theoretical models relating to gender, race and class to the reading of literary texts.
  4. Explain the conceptual frameworks, terminologies and emphases of the political literary theories introduced.

Unit Content

  1. Assumptions, conventions and critical lexicons governing political-literary theories related to ideology, gender, race and class.
  2. Critical application of theoretical models to literary texts.
  3. Relevant historical knowledge contextualising selected literary texts.
  4. Relevant theoretical texts.
  5. Selected poetic and dramatic texts.
