Children's University Edith Cowan

Children’s University Edith Cowan (CU ECU) launched in December 2017 with our champion school partner, Wanneroo Primary School. Our network is continually growing, with new partner schools and validated learning destinations welcome to join the program.

Originating in the United Kingdom, this award-winning model provides extra-curricular learning opportunities to children aged between 7 and 14 years old, and volunteer opportunities for 15-18 year olds, with the aim to engage children in learning, provide the resources for children to develop self-efficacy, confidence and aspirations and is also recognised for improving academic achievement and increasing students’ aspirations.  The CU model provides educational experiences for children outside of school and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates.

The Australian Government, Department of Education and Training’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) currently fund the program.

How does it work?

The program engages with learning providers in the wider community, including sports clubs, museums, galleries, and school clubs, emphasising experience as a significant learning tool.

The initiative recognises the value of different learning styles and environments in which children engage and work, to provide learning opportunities for a variety of interests. These activities must take place outside of the normal class time, e.g. during lunchtime, after school, weekends and holidays.

Children are issued with a Passport to Learning to record their individual learning journey. Each year, participating members are recognised at a formal graduation ceremony hosted on our Joondalup campus. The hours they achieve are cumulative, allowing students to build towards higher award levels.
