Changing Education Providers

Transferring Education Providers

Education providers are restricted from enrolling students who have not completed 6 months of study with their Principal Provider except in limited circumstances.

Students Transferring to ECU

Students wishing to transfer to ECU before they have completed 6 months of their Principal course of study must:

  • Apply to ECU and have a valid offer
  • Present an appropriate ‘Release Letter’ from their existing Principal Provider and pay their fees to have their course acceptance finalised and COE granted
  • Students’ under-18 must also provide written evidence that their parent or legal guardian supports the transfer AND have appropriate arrangements in place for their accommodation, support and general welfare.

Students Requesting Release from ECU

International students who have not completed 6 months of study at ECU are required to present a ‘Release Letter’ to the institution they wish to transfer to. In the case of packaged offer students, ECU is the principal provider - even if the student has yet to commence the University program of study. These students also require release from a packaged program to be approved.

The process for requesting release is as follows:

  1. Student completes “Letter Request” form (available from ECU International counter or at (http://www.ecu.edu.au/international/studentsupport/forms.html) and submits to ECUI together with a valid offer letter from the intended receiving institution and a letter addressed to the Manager – International Admissions outlining the reason for request.
  2. Each request for release will be assessed individually by the Release Request Panel (Panel) (consisting of Manager – International Admissions and an International Student Adviser).
  3. A response will be provided to the student within 5 working days.
  4. A. Grounds for release include but are not limited to:
    i. Compassionate and compelling personal circumstances beyond the control of the student as determined by the Panel.
ii. A student has clearly shown through studies at a preliminary program/s an inability to meet entrance requirements of the ECU principal course.
iii. Student has completed one academic semester at ECU (but not the 6 calendar months stipulated in The National Code 2007).

    B. General grounds for a decision not to release could include but are not limited to:
    i. Student currently onshore wishing to transfer from one pathway provider to another, unless exceptional circumstances apply.
ii. A residential address in Perth considered by the student to not be close enough to an ECU campus.
iii. Transfer to similar program at another institution.

Note: It is expected that students applying for release will provide supporting documentary evidence (e.g. medical certificates, academic transcripts or other relevant information which support their request).

It is recommended that Transferring students contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship [DIAC] to seek advice on whether they will require a new Student Visa. DIAC can be contacted on 131 881.
