Customs
Travellers may bring the following items into Australia duty free:
- 2.25l alcoholic liquor per adult
- 250 cigarettes or 250 grams of cigars or tobacco products per adult
- personal items such as clothing and items for personal hygiene or grooming
- personal goods owned and used for at least 12 months (proof of date of purchase may be required)
- goods (not including alcohol or tobacco) to the value of AU$900 per adult, including gifts, souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume, jewellery and sporting goods
Gifts (given to you or intended for others) are counted as part of the AU$900 duty free allowance. If you have anything with you in excess of the duty free allowance, you must declare the goods and provide proof of purchase to Customs for calculation of any duty and tax to be paid. Customs will not collect combined duty and taxes of less than AU$50 provided that excess goods are declared. There is no limit to the amount of Australian or foreign currency you bring with you however amounts over AU$10,000 must be declared.
Please note: if you are bringing a new computer with you, you must declare it as above, and you may be required to pay a refundable bond. You will also be required to take it out of Australia with you each year or else you will need to pay customs duty. If you are bringing a computer that you have owned for at least 12 months, you will not need to pay duty or a bond, but you must bring your receipt of purchase with you. You will still need to declare the computer to the customs officer, however tell the customs officer that the computer is for personal use only.
