Quarantine
Australia's quarantine regulations are very strict and many foodstuffs, plants, animal products, weapons and some medicines may not be imported into Australia. You will be required to declare such items on the incoming passenger card you receive on the plane before you arrive.
Please read the "What I can't take into Australia" quarantine brochure available from the Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service website.
If you are bringing medication with you, check with your local Australian mission to confirm that the amount and kind of medicine you require is permitted in Australia. It is also a good idea to bring a letter from your doctor describing the kind of medicine you require, and for what condition.
Goods including live plants, seeds, animals, dairy and egg products, shells, feather products and wood must also be declared, but you may be able to bring them into the country after a quarantine officer has inspected them. Some articles may need to be treated before being returned to you, which will incur a fee.
Please remember to declare any of the items mentioned above as it is routine procedure for customs officials to search the luggage of people coming into Australia. Should you be found with any of these items in your possession you could be liable for on-the-spot fines or even prosecution.
For more information, please visit the Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service website.
