Applying

Exchange application deadlines:

28 February 2010 - For exchange in semester two 2010
31 July 2010 - For exchange in semester one 2011

Late applications may be considered

Step 1 - Check your eligibility

You can apply to go on student exchange if:

  • You are an ECU student in good academic standing; and
  • You are an undergraduate who has completed at least the equivalent of one full-time semester of study (however you will need to successfully complete one full-time year before you can go); OR
  • You are a postgraduate at the start of your ECU course (however you need to successfully complete one full-time semester before you can go)

Step 2 - Select a Partner Institution

Choose which country you wish to study; research overseas institutions

Step 3 - Download and complete ECU Exchange form

  1. Exchange Program application
  2. Certification of Finances form
  3. Exchange Credit Transfer form
  4. Student Exchange Academic Reference form (two required)
  5. Student Exchange Statement of Understanding

Step 4 - Academic approval

As part of the application process your course coordinator will need to approve the units you plan to enrol in at the overseas partner using the Exchange Credit Transfer form. It is your responsibility to research the units offered at partner institution and provide any documentation necessary to your ECU Course Coordinator for approval. Ultimately, ECU course coordinators approve the final study plan for the exchange period, thus ensuring that credit goes towards your ECU degree. You will need to complete an ECU Exchange Credit Transfer form and have this signed off by your course coordinator prior to submitting your application for exchange.

Step 5 - Funding your exchange

We suggest that you allow for at least AUD$10,000 per semester of study overseas; however, this will vary based on the country in which you choose to study. The funding can come from a number of sources including:

  • Austudy/Youth allowance - if you currently receive this benefit you will continue to do so while you are away. You may also be eligible for rental assistance.
  • Personal savings
  • Funding provided by parents/sponsor
  • Scholarships and awards
  • Loans (such as OS-HELP)

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have enough funds to support yourself while you are on exchange as no additional funds will be available from ECU should your own funds run out before your return. In some exchange countries it may be possible to work, however this will depend on your visa conditions. You should not count on working overseas as a way to fund your exchange semester/s.

Please note that you may be required to show proof of sufficient financial means as part of the partner institution and/or visa application process.

Step 6 - Additional ECU documentation

You must submit a typed one page Statement of Purpose outlining the reasons, both academic and personal, for wanting to undertake an ECU exchange. The statement should also address the reasons why you wish to attend the nominated institution(s) and why you would be a good ambassador for ECU. Be sure to address any challenges you believe you will face whilst on exchange and how you will overcome these challenges.

You must also submit two Academic References. These can be obtained, for example, from your ECU lecturers, tutors or course coordinator. If you have any difficulty obtaining two references please contact the ECU Study Abroad and Exchange Office for guidance.

Step 7 - Submitting the application form
