- Electronic mail systems, as well as voice mail, are the property
of Edith Cowan University and as such may be monitored and stored.
- A prudent practice is not to transmit messages on these systems
that wouldn't ordinarily be put in writing in a University document.
- Never use unknown/unauthorised software on your computer.
- ALWAYS backup your work
- Ensure your computer has a screen saver which requires a password
for access
- Always logout and turn off your computer at the end of the day
- Lock your office whenever you leave it.
- If you use a laptop computer, always use the security alarm
provided with it.
- All valuable, portable equipment must be locked away at night
in a filing cabinet or cupboard.
REMEMBER...
Password protection is one of the most important principles of information
security.
The following hint should help you select a secure password.
Password selection should ensure that:
- you can remember the password
- the password cannot be guessed
- the password cannot be cracked easily by a Password Cracking program
- Passwords should not be written down
- Passwords must not be disclosed to any other person
- Passwords should be changed each semester
Guidelines
Users should follow these guidelines when selecting a password:
- It should be a minimum of six characters
- It should consist of a mix of numbers, letters (both cases) and punctuation
- Choose a line of a poem or song and use the first letter of each word
- Invent an acronym
- Use a combination of first letters and numbers to represent words, such as 1 (won), 2 (to, too), 4 (for), 8 (ate), b (be, bee), c (see, sea), q (queue), r (are), t (tea), u (you), y (why)
- Use numbers to replace letters, eg. 1 (I), 0 (O), 3 (E), 5 (S), 7 (T)
- Do not use obvious keyboard sequences, names or words in any language, names or words in reverse or with a number before or after
