What We Do

The primary purpose of Academic Development is to service the pedagogically related professional development needs of ECU academic staff. The Academic Development team focus on ensuring that relevant, challenging and interesting teaching and learning activities are offered to academic staff, providing support in the following ways:

presenting face to face and online short courses, seminars and practical workshops,
providing useful teaching and learning reference and resource materials,
managing teaching and learning related programs and schemes, and offering customized individual advice and assistance.

The range of academic professional development activities are determined in conjunction with the teaching and learning priorities of the University, the expressed needs of Associate Deans Teaching and Learning and Heads of School and through consultation with relevant groups and individuals.

Academic Development offer a suite of short courses, seminars and practical workshops designed to accommodate the pedagogically related professional development needs of ECU academic staff, including teaching and learning related courses, online courses and courses for new university staff.

Courses for New University Staff

Edith Cowan University requires all new academic staff to participate in professional development relating to university teaching and learning. To address this, new academic staff with ongoing part and full time contracts are required to complete PDC111Teaching @ECU: Getting Started and PDC113Teaching@ECU:Principles & Practices.

New sessional academic staff are required to complete PDC111Teaching @ECU: Getting Started and PDC112Teaching@ECU:Sessional Teaching.

Teaching and Learning Related Programs and Schemes

Academic Development is involved in the following teaching and learning related activities, programs and schemes, including Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Services to Learning and Teaching Excellence (VCSLATE)and ECU Applications for the Carrick Institute Awards for University Teaching (CAAUT).
