Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Grants and Fellowships 2009

This page includes information on:

ALTC Grants 2009

The ALTC offers Australian universities a substantial annual grants program that includes three different Program categories:

  1. Competitive Grants (approximately $3.4 million)
  2. Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (approximately $2.8 million)
  3. Priority Projects  (approximately $4.9 million)

Program Guidelines for the three categories of ALTC grants can be downloaded from the ALTC website at http://www.altc.edu.au/carrick/go/home/grants/pid/54

It should be noted that grant applications which show evidence of serious collaboration with other universities are more likely to be successful.

Relationship between the three Programs

A list of the funding priorities for all programs is found below. The abbreviation shows the program which address this funding priority: Leadership Program (LP), Priority Projects Program (PP); Competitive Grants Program (CG)

  • Leadership capacity building for learning and teaching (LP)
  • Curriculum renewal (PP)
  • Assessment, standards and reporting (PP)
  • Learning and teaching spaces (PP)
  • Peer review for promotion (PP)
  • Research and development focussing on issues of emerging and continuing importance (CG)
  • Strategic approaches to learning and teaching that address the increasing diversity of the student body (CG)
  • Innovation in learning and teaching, including in relation to the role of new technologies (CG)

Following is a little more information about the three ALTC grant categories for 2009:

1. Competitive Grants Program 2009

Closing date for Expressions of Interest and Full Proposals for the 2009 program is 6 November 2008.  Applications should be submitted directly via the ALTC grants application system at http://www.carrickinstitute.edu.au/carrick/go/home/grants/pid/53

Intending Competitive Grant applicants from ECU are urged to contact Rod Ellis (r.ellis@ecu.edu.au), in semester 2, 2008, or Heather Sparrow (h.sparrow@ecu.edu.au) in semester 1, 2009, to register your intent to apply for an ALTC grant and to receive information that should assist you with the application process.

Competitive Grants Program Priorities
Prospective applicants for funding under the Competitive Grants Program are advised to familiarise themselves with the ALTC Competitive Grants Guidelines, particularly Sections 3 and 4 which contain the policies for this program.

Through this Program, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) provides grants for research, development and innovation related to the enhancement of learning and teaching in higher education.

The funding priorities for 2009 are:

  • Priority 1: Research and development focussing on issues of emerging and continuing importance
  • Priority 2: Strategic approaches to learning and teaching that address the increasing diversity of the student body.  Priority 2 applications for 2009 must address the issues of student diversity directly – applicants should not assume that projects addressing students are by implication addressing the “diversity of the student body”
  • Priority 3: Development of robust methods of identifying and rewarding excellence in teaching (excluding awards schemes)
  • Applications will NOT be received under this priority in 2009!
  • Priority 4: Innovation in learning and teaching, particularly in relation to the role of new technologies

Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program Priorities
The Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program is designed to build leadership capacity in ways that promote and advance learning and teaching in Australian higher education.

The Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program has several different strands focused at the national, institutional, discipline-based and specific project levels. It will also have some emphasis on ensuring appropriate attention to models of leadership that enhance community partnering (including with professional communities), and that contribute effectively to institutional and community recognition of the fundamental importance of teaching in higher education.

The ALTC has identified the need for systematic, structured support for academic leadership as a key focus for its activities in 2008-12. Evidence suggests that leadership capacity-building in higher education is uneven across the sector, and that many academic leaders rely too much on learning on the job. By contrast, the ALTC’s position is that academic leadership is a highly specialised and professional activity. The ALTC has therefore established a program focused on Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching as one of three programs under the umbrella of the Grants Scheme.

Through this Program, the ALTC will provide grants to support projects that build leadership capacity in ways consistent with the promotion and enhancement of learning and teaching in contemporary higher education, and which reflect the ALTC’s values of excellence, inclusiveness, diversity and collaboration, and its commitment to long-term, systemic change. All activities within the program will be underpinned by a scholarly and evidence-based approach, building actively on initiatives and ideas emerging both within Australia and internationally.

The funding priorities for 2009 are:

  • Priority one: Institutional leadership: to enhance learning and teaching through leadership capacity-building at the institutional level.  The funding range is $150,000 to $220,000. The project duration is up to 2.5 years.
  • Priority two: Disciplinary and cross-disciplinary leadership: to enhance learning and teaching through leadership capacity-building in discipline structures, communities of practice and cross-disciplinary networks.  The funding range is: $80,000 to $220,000.  The project duration is up to 2 years.
  • Priority three: Consolidating leadership by building on the outcomes of projects funded in earlier years under the Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program. The funding range is $80,000 to $120,000.  The project duration is up to 1.5 years.

Nomination and selection process
Individuals may nominate with the support of their institution. Nominees prepare a written nomination and obtain a written statement of support from their home institution, as detailed in the 2009 Fellowship Scheme Guidelines. All nominations must be postmarked no later that Friday, 6 February 2009.

Intending ALTC Fellowship applicants from ECU are asked to contact the Awards and Grants Consultant at the ECU Centre for Learning and Teaching to register your intent to apply for an ALTC Fellowship and to receive information that should assist you with the application process.  Please contact Rod Ellis (r.ellis@ecu.edu.au), in semester 2, 2008, or Heather Sparrow (h.sparrow@ecu.edu.au) in semester 1, 2009,

Nominations are assessed on the basis of the written submission. Short-listed nominations for the National Teaching Fellowships will make a presentation selected by the ALTC Standing Committee, on the basis of the written nominations received. All nominees will be notified of the outcome of this in early April 2009.

Selected National Teaching Fellows nominees will then be invited to present a seminar on the educational issue they propose to address during the fellowship. These presentations take place before a panel drawn from the ALTC Standing Committee and other invitees. Travel costs for presenting nominees are covered by the ALTC. This presentation will be held in mid-late April 2009.

All successful Fellows will be announced in May 2009.

The ALTC Standing Committee may choose to offer a nominee a fellowship under either program.
