Online Search Using Connect
- It is possible to download electronic records straight into EndNote from catalogues and databases (which observe a particular protocol) using Connect.
- The Online Search feature is restricted at ECU (on-campus) due to security.
- Online Search is not available when using a wireless laptop connection unless the VPN client is enabled.
- Using an Internet Service Provider from home it may be possible to Online Search other free databases and catalogues.
- Databases to which ECU subscribes must be accessed through the library, not Connect.
- Searches for items with Online Search are limited by the EndNote search engine.
- There are several other ways to get information into EndNote, including Direct Export and Import.
Direct Export
Some databases have a Direct Export option which will transfer selected records into a specified EndNote library. This is the opposite situation to Online Search. The advantage of Direct Export is that you can use the full power of the database search engine to perform the search and only involve EndNote when you have selected items of interest. When searching a database, save your results and follow the prompts to export to Endnote. Direct Export is also possible with Google Scholar after first setting preferences under "Scholar preferences".
Because direct export uses generic filters to import information into EndNote, some final editing may be required to get information into the correct fields. For example, you may find all the source information in one field and have to cut and paste the volume, pages etc into their respective fields.
Import
Records from database searches can be imported into EndNote in a two step process. Results of a search are saved separately and then imported into EndNote via filters. EndNote filters are sets of instructions for interpreting database tags which will bring results into the correct fields in an EndNote library. First check the EndNote filter manager for a filter for the database of interest. Then read any instructions for saving the results of searches. Next perform the search in the database and save results according to instructions. Finally import the results using the selected filter.
EndNote comes with a suite of filters, many of them for American databases. There is some trial and error in finding a filter which works. Additional filters can be obtained from the EndNote Import Filters page.
With both Online Search and Direct Export options you need to have access to the database and your EndNote library in the same place. Using Import, searches can be saved on a computer which does not have your EndNote library (eg working in the ECU library and then taking saved searches home to a computer with EndNote).
