Output Styles

What is an Output Style?

Output Styles are sets of instructions which EndNote uses to format your references in the style of your choice. The EndNote vX3 Demonstration explains how to set the output style in EndNote.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate users of EndNote should select the APA 6th style. Using EndNote cannot make up for a lack of understanding about referencing. You need to know when to reference and also how a formatted reference should look. For more information, students should consult either the ECU Referencing Guide or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Edition (ECU library call no. 808.06615PUB). Tutorials on how to reference can be found on the Referencing page.

Higher Degree Students & Staff

References should be formatted in a style used by a major international journal in the area of study. For students this is to be determined in consultation with the principal supervisor.

Many students still choose to use the APA6th style. Postgraduate students are advised to consult the full APA manual:
Publication manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Edition (ECU Library call No. 808. 06615 PUB).
