Books – searching the library catalogue
To find books, on a topic, use the keyword option in the ECU catalogue. Terms can be entered either as a phrase (e.g. evidence based medicine), or combined by Boolean operators and, or, not, (e.g. alternative medicine and primary care).
The search can be further refined by selecting the subject headings displayed within the catalogue entry of a particular book
E.g. Alternative medicine --- Law and legislation --- Australia
Alternative medicine --- Moral and ethical aspects --- Australia

There are a number of electronic books available via the ECU Library Catalogue. To restrict a search to online material, use the drop down menu to change the search option from “”View Entire Collection” to “ONLINE”.

Journals - Searching library databases
There are a range of library databases relevant to Postgraduate Medicine.
To access these:
1. Go to ECU Library Online
2. Click on Journal articles (Databases)
3. Choose from one of the following options:
- find databases by faculty
- find databases by subject
- find databases by title
- search across several databases (MetaQuest)
Regardless of which pathway is chosen, the result is a list of databases relevant to medicine.

Requesting journal articles not held by ECU
To request journal articles not held by ECU:
Go to Document Delivery
- Click on Connect to VDX (Virtual Document Exchange)
- Sign in (User ID=staff/student number; Password=date of birth DDMMYYYY).
- Click on Search & Request
- Enter journal title
- Click on GO!
- Click Get it! on desired title.
- Enter details for article or chapter in fields under Part Details
- Submit & accept Copyright prompt (for articles & chapters)
- Note ILL request number for tracking purposes.

You will be notified by e-mail when the journal article has arrived

Electronic journals
The ECU library catalogue lists e-journals and the library databases
link to particular online articles.
To find e-journals held by ECU:
· Go to the
ECU library catalogue
· Use
either the Title or Journal Title option, and use the drop down menu to
restrict the search to Online material.
To find particular
online articles:
· Click on Journal Articles (Databases)
· Choose find a specific journal reference
· Enter
details into the SFX Locator. The Locator checks if ECU has an
online full text copy of an article. |

Referencing at ECU is based on the 5th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
