ECU celebrates International Day of People with Disability
Friday, 02 October 2009
ECU celebrated the International Day of People with a Disability last month with events held at the Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses.
At the Joondalup campus, Kerry Allan-Zinner gave an inspiring presentation about living with Cerebral Palsy and her decision to use this experience to inspire and educate others to create accepting and welcoming communities for people with disabilities.
The following day WA’s National Wheelchair Basketball League team, the Wheelcats, played an exhibition match at ECU Mount Lawley’s Sport and Fitness Centre.
Following the game, staff and students were invited to give wheelchair basketball a go.
Professor Brenda Cherednichenko, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equity and Indigenous) said that while it was fun, it’s also a reminder of the challenges faced by those with disabilities.
Students from Mount Lawley Senior High School also attended the event and enjoyed the opportunity to have a go at wheelchair basketball.
International Day of People with Disability is celebrated nationally on 3 December each year, however ECU celebrates the day during the semester.
