The Minister for Training, the Hon Peter Collier MLC, along with the Member for the East Metropolitan Region, the Hon Alyssa Hayden MLC visited WAAPA this week for an up-close-and-personal glimpse of the facilities, staff and students.
The Minister and Ms Hayden had both expressed a keen interest in visiting WAAPA, excited to see how things work behind the scenes of the Academy with such a strong reputation.
Director of WAAPA, Professor Julie Warn AM took the guests on a tour, giving them the opportunity to view the diverse range of fields available, including dance, theatre, props and scenery, sound and lighting.
They also had the opportunity over lunch to discuss WAAPA courses and pathways, along with Graham Wood (Program Director – Music) and Leisa Landre-Ord (Production, Design, Management).
Both the Minister and Ms Hayden were particularly impressed by the vitality and enthusiasm on display by students and staff in all disciplines, and commented that it was invigorating to see such personal passion at work.
The Minister went on to say that it is important for young people to be able to nurture their true interests and talents.
“Not everyone is inclined to follow a traditional academic pathway, and skills gained in appropriate training programs will set students up for very fulfilling careers,” he said.
