Congratulations to ECU’s Professor Ralph Martins who was named WA Australian of the Year for 2010 by the Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC, on Saturday, 21 November.

ECU’s Foundation Chair of Ageing and Alzheimer’s, and Head of the Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care, Professor Martins is one of the world’s leading researchers into Alzheimer’s disease. He and his team were the first to discover that the beta amyloid protein that coats the brain is the foundation of Alzheimer’s disease.

Professor Martins is also Director of Research for the McCusker Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation established to enhance medical research into Alzheimer’s disease in Western Australia.
Professor Martins’ win was praised by ECU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kerry Cox.

”On behalf of the ECU community, I congratulate Professor Martins on the excellence of his research, and also, on his deep commitment to ensuring that these gains in knowledge of a devastating disease are translated into gains for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease,” he said.

As WA Australian of the Year, Professor Martins will now represent WA in the national awards, with the winner to be announced on 25 January 2010.
