Professor Ralph Martins nominated for WA Australian of the Year

Wednesday, 11 November 2009

ECU’s Professor Ralph Martins has been nominated as a WA finalist for the 2010 Australian of the Year Awards.

Professor Martins is nominated for his ground breaking research into Alzheimer’s disease.

His team made the first significant discovery, showing that the beta amyloid protein that coats the brain is the foundation of Alzheimer’s.

Professor Martins has been instrumental in bringing a new technology to Perth that makes it possible to determine if a patient has deposits of the toxic beta amyloid.

The team led by Professor Martins are now working on an early stage diagnostic blood test.

Professor Martins is one of four finalists nominated from a field of thousands. The award winners will be announced on Saturday, 21 November.
