ECU’s Vario Health Institute is leading the way in research for cancer management and rehabilitation following the recent publication of a Consensus Statement in the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Entitled, Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors, the statement provides guidelines for exercise assessment and the prescription of cancer management in North America and much of the world with the Vario Health Institute the only research group in Australia to be represented in the international document.

Director of the Vario Health Institute, Associate Professor Daniel Galvão, believes the Statement raises important issues about cancer management and rehabilitation.

“Historically, clinicians have advised cancer patients to rest and avoid activity, however current science shows this guidance is outdated.

“This landmark Consensus Statement will alter clinical practice worldwide and we are delighted to be the only Australian research team represented in this influential document.”

The Statement was presented at the American College of Sports Medicine 57th Annual Meeting in Baltimore on 2 June and published in its full version in the July issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
