WAAPA voices transform St Mary's Cathedral

Monday, 12 July 2010

ECU’s WAAPA proudly presents a classical concert entitled, A Child of Our Time, held at St Mary’s Cathedral as part of the Perth Winter Arts Season.

The Sir Michael Tippett 1938 masterpiece will be performed by the Faith Court Orchestra, WAAPA vocal students and a guest choir from John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, and is directed by WAAPA lecturer Peter Tanfield.

Written at the beginning of the Second World War, A Child of Our Time is a pacifist’s reply to the heart-breaking events of Kristallnacht – ‘night of broken glass’ – when the Nazis triggered a massive, coordinated attack on Jews throughout the German Reich.

Tippett's oratorio was written as an expression of 'man's inhumanity to man' and has become one of his most widely known works.

WAAPA Director, Professor Julie Warn, believes the performance will be both powerful and moving.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to perform for the first time in the magnificent surrounds of St Mary’s Cathedral in this multi-denominational, unifying concert.

“Hearing the sounds of over 100 musicians in the incredible acoustics of the Cathedral will be a memorable experience for audiences,” said Professor Warn.
