2010 WA Business Icon winner Ben Smith
Congratulations to ECU graduate Ben Smith, who was recently announced as the winner of the 2010 WA Business Icon competition on Monday, 2 August at a luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The Business Icon competition is an annual event that invites young people aged 18 to 25 to compete in a range of activities, which mix the best elements of competitive television shows such as The Apprentice and Australian Idol over a 10-day competition.
Entrants are tested on their creativity, innovation, teamwork and leadership skills, with the final four competing at a gala corporate luncheon in front of over 300 potential employers, sponsors and guests.
As the winner of the Business Icon 2010 competition, Ben will receive an internship at an organisation most suited to his career development, $2,000 in prize money and a trip to Singapore.
Ben, who graduated from ECU with a Bachelor of Sport Management in 2009, is looking forward to the great opportunities gained by winning the state-wide competition.
"It was like being in a 10-day business coma in which I could put all the skills I had attained at ECU right into play. Taking the cake from 600 other applicants reinforces why ECU is such a great place to study.”
"I now have opportunities to excel in the business world and fully immerse myself in the professional playground,” said Mr Smith.
This is the second year in a row that an ECU student has won the award, with current ECU business and psychology student, Rebecca Olsen winning in 2009.
Rebecca spoke at the luncheon, and credited the competition for giving her the chance to turn her business vision into a reality.
“If one thing is for certain, it is that I am definitely not the same person I was standing up here a year ago,” said Ms Olsen.
Ben is currently working as the Recreation Officer at the City of Bayswater, and is looking forward to using the opportunity to gain an internship with the AFL, or other large sporting organisations such as Nike or Adidas.
