Psychoanalytic Symposium Series

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

ECU, in conjunction with the Australian Psychoanalytical Society (APAS), invites staff and students to attend the inaugural Psychoanalytic Symposium, entitled The place of psychoanalysts in best practice for mental health in Australia today.

The symposium is the first of its kind in Western Australia, offering professionals and interested community members the chance to learn from psychoanalytic experts in the field, with guest presentations from leading members of the International and Australian Psychoanalytical Societies.

The two-day event will begin with a free public lecture led by child and adult psychoanalyst and training analyst Dr Louise Gyler, on Friday, 29 October, which will discuss the benefits of psychoanalysis and what it means, with the aim to answer the question; How effective is psychoanalytical treatment?

The public lecture will be followed by a workshop, held on Saturday, 30 October entitled; Making sense of the inner world: The workings of psychological treatment, which investigates the role of psychoanalysis within the modern world.

Coordinator of ECU’s Counselling and Psychotherapy Program, Dr Sarron Goldman believes the symposium is a fantastic opportunity for mental health professionals and community members to learn from experts in the field and develop a greater understanding of psychoanalytical treatments.

“In Western Australia there is no formal psychoanalytical training institute, and no international association for people within the profession.”

“ECU’s counselling and psychotherapy course has distinguished itself as the longest running postgraduate training for counsellors and psychotherapists in Western Australia, and we plan to utilise our knowledge and expertise to develop a series of training events that will educate both professionals and the community on the benefits of psychoanalysis.”
