Melanoma public lecture a great success

Friday, 22 October 2010

ECU’s Office of Research and Innovation welcomed over 70 members of the ECU community on Tuesday, 19 October for a public lecture entitled; Can you tell the difference between a mole and a melanoma.

The lecture, which was opened by Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Professor Lyn Beazley AO provided an insightful look into melanoma research, and included guest presentations from the Head of ECU Melanoma Research Group, Associate Professor Mel Ziman and CEO of Melanoma WA, Mr Clinton Heal.

Professor Ziman explained the research conducted at the ECU Melanoma Research Group, which includes the development of a simple blood test to aid in early detection and prevention of the disease.

“Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma is the world, and it was fantastic so see so many people show up to learn about this disease. “

“Greater education will help prevent the spread of melanoma and this combined with ongoing research, will successfully help decrease the instances of melanoma in Australia,” said Professor Ziman.

Other guest speakers at the event included National Health Medical Research Council Principal Research Fellow, Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, Professor Prue Hart and distinguished plastic surgeon, Associate Professor Robert Pearce.
