ECU’s Office of Research and Innovation is pleased to launch the second instalment of the Research@ECU online video series, which provides an insight into the stories behind some of ECU’s most talented and successful researchers.
The second video in the series profiles Director of ECU’s Health and Wellness Institute, Associate Professor Daniel Galvão, a leader in the understanding of exercise strategies as a way to counter the adverse effects of various medical treatments in prostate cancer patients.
He is recognised nationally for his research, receiving the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science ‘Most Outstanding PhD Thesis of the Year’ award in 2007, and has written a number of papers which have been published in high impact journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of Urology.
Professor Galvão has co-authored the Cancer Council of Western Australia Guidelines for Implementing Exercise Programs for Cancer Patients and the Position Statement from Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) on Exercise and Cancer. Professor Galvão's international reputation in the field of exercise oncology has been recognised internationally, when he was invited to sit on the writing committee for the influential American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Consensus Statement on Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors.
In 2007, Professor Galvão received the Early Career Investigator Grant from The Cancer Council of Western Australia, in 2008 the ECU Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research by an Early Career Academic and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia Young Investigator Grant. In 2009 he received the Government of Western Australia Department of Health New Independent Researcher Infrastructure Support (NIRIS) award.
Professor Galvão has received project grants as chief investigator from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Cancer Australia, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, The Cancer Council of WA, and The Cancer Council of QLD for amounts totalling $2.5 million.
The key focus of his current research is exploring and defining how exercise can be employed in cancer management to materially improve patient outcomes.
