Congratulations to the team at Degrees Brewery who were awarded a Silver Medal at the 2011 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) held at the Melbourne Convention Centre on 20 May 2011.
AIBA is the pre-eminent showcase for premium beer and brewing excellence. Since its inception in 1993, AIBA has grown in stature, attracting a remarkable number of high quality and innovative beers from Australian and international breweries.
This year there were 1148 beers, both draught and packaged, from 241 breweries across 34 countries.
Degrees Brewery entered two of its packaged beers: Dubbel and Rauchbier. The design and brewing of these beers was a collaborative effort between the Degrees team of Jon Luff, Hugh Dunn and Clay Millar.
Of the two beers entered, Degrees Rauchbier received one of only three silver medals awarded in the packaged Smoked beer class. No gold medals were awarded in this typically German dominated category.
Of the three silver medals awarded, ECU’s Rauchbier was ranked the highest and the only recipient not to originate from Bamberg, Germany the historic home of rauch beers.
Rauch beers were created after local people discovered that the beech wood they were using to dry the malts in the wetter months of the year were providing a distinct smokey flavour. This unique taste proved to be so popular that malts were deliberately smoked from then on to ensure demand was met for the beer.
Rauchbier and Dubbel will be on sale at Degrees Brewery (building 9) on Thursday, 9 June, Friday, 24 June and Thursday, 7 July 9.30am – 2.00pm. Come along and purchase the award winning Rauchbier.
