$300,000 to research energy-efficient glass
ECU’s Research Commercialisation Office negotiated a collaborative research agreement between ECU and Tropiglas Technologies Ltd.
Professor Kamal Alameh and his team at the Electron Science Research Institute (ESRI) will use the funding to design and develop a highly-efficient glazing system. They will research an advanced material system using transparent window glass panels with embedded thin film coatings.
They are engineered to prevent infrared radiation from entering a room or building whilst also harvesting the energy from the infrared part of the solar spectrum and producing electricity. ESRI will provide the research, the development team and fabrication. They will also test and characterise facilities and infrastructure needed for the development of the demonstrator glass. Tropiglas Technologies Ltd will then commercialise the technology with ECU receiving a share of eventual revenues.
Professor Alameh said the goal was to move towards fabricating a prototype product.
“It is highly likely that window panels possessing these properties will generate substantial economic and environmental benefits,” Professor Alameh said.
