ECU staff and students are encouraged to attend a national consultation program to seek views on recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in our nation's Constitution.

Initiated by the Australian Government in 2010, the consultation program will be led by an expert panel of respected and accomplished individuals including;

· Indigenous and community leaders;

· constitutional experts; and

· parliamentary members.

It will be co-chaired by Professor Patrick Dodson and Mr Mark Leibler AC.

Following the nationwide consultation, the Panel will report to the Government on possible options for constitutional change to give effect to Indigenous constitutional recognition, including advice as to the level of support from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader community for each option by December 2011.

The Perth public consultations, to be held on 13 and 14 September, will be hosted by the Hon Fred Chaney AO and Mr Bill Lawson AM.
