ECU staff and students joined Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kerry Cox, to launch the 2011 ECU Australian University Games (AUG) team as they get set to head to the Gold Coast for next week’s competition.

This year ECU is proud to sport the largest travelling team to date, with over 210 athletes, coaches and managers heading to the eastern states.

Male squad captain, Mark Van Winsen, is excited about the event, which he sees as the highlight of a University student’s life.

Female captain, Georgia Diaz agrees.

“I would love to see every ECU student experience all the great things that the AUG has to offer. I have University Sport to thank for all the lifelong friends I made through events like AUG,” Georgia said.

ECU are hoping to capitalise on their 2010 success, where they finished fifth overall and second in the Doug Ellis award, which recognises the best team achievement per capita. ECU are reigning Australian University champions in men’s and women’s Beach Volleyball, men’s Football, Lawn Bowls, men’s Golf & men’s Squash.

The Australian University Games runs from Sunday, 25 to Friday, 30 of September. For more information and to follow the ECU team’s success, visit the Australian University Games website.
