Congratulations to Dr Jennifer Thompson, winner of the Australian Neuroscience Society’s 2nd Prize for her oral presentation on ECU’s world-first Huntington’s disease research.

The awards were presented at the Symposium of Western Australian Neuroscience at the University of Western Australia recently.

Dr Thompson is the project manager of the Huntington’s Disease Research Group, based at ECU’s Joondalup Campus.

The group is investigating how brain-training exercises, gym training and social stimulation can help reduce and in some cases even reverse the devastating side-effects of Huntington’s.

Results so far show that people in the early to mid stages of Huntington’s can ultimately benefit from this type of rehabilitation.

In receiving the honour, Dr Thompson thanked those who make up the Huntington’s Research group.

“This is a world-first pilot program, and its success is 100 per cent thanks to the work of everyone involved, particularly the program participants who have given up their valuable time to be part of this trial,” Dr Thompson said.

“This win is great validation for the project and I look forward to working with the team and our participants in the future to further investigate Huntington’s and how we can improve the lives of those affected.”

Further information on the 18-month trial project can also be found on the ECU website.
