Visualisation Challenge winner Mr Paul Wong wth Collaborative Research Network Manager Dr Darren Gibson
How do Australians browse the internet? This question was answered recently by Mr Paul Wong, winner of the inaugural iVEC@ECU Data Visualisation Challenge.
Run by the newly established iVEC@ECU Facility, the challenge was open to anyone from across ECU, asking them to take two or more sets of information and mash the data sets in a new and interesting way through visualisation.
The investigation revealed some interesting findings about how internet usage has changed over time, including:
- Internet Explorer dominated more than 90 per cent of the Internet Browser market share in 2002 but it is diminishing by the day;
- Chrome is currently the most widely used Internet Browser in the world;
- Many Firefox users started switching to Chrome since it was introduced in 2008; and
- Safari maintains its presence in the top five browser list thanks to the Apple’s Mac, iPad and iPhone products.
“In today’s world, we are more connected to the Internet than ever before. Technologies such as smart phone, tablet and other mobile devices enable us to stay connected effortlessly to the internet wherever we go,” Mr Wong, an EIM Technical lead from the ECU’s IT Service Centre said.
“Through this competition, I have been exposed to various modern data visualisation techniques and toolsets.”
“It is extremely interesting to discover that there are many creative, profound and fascinating ways to visualise data. Supercomputing technology can quickly convert a multitude of complex data into useful information and knowledge through data visualisation,” Mr Wong said.
Based at ECU’s Mount Lawley Campus, the iVEC@ECU Facility connects ECU researchers to the newest developments in visualisation research through cutting edge technology.
Launched in September this year, the facility is connected to the iVEC supercomputers, based at Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia, and is open to all staff and student researchers.
