Singing his way to success

WAAPA graduate Richard Symons has received a prestigious 2012 Sir Robert William Askin Operatic Scholarship, worth $20,000.

Graduating in 2011, Mr Symons is an emerging opera superstar. He performed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting opening ceremony last year.

Earlier this year he scored the only singing role in WA Ballet’s performance of Pinocchio, playing the role of the singing cricket.

The scholarship will be paid in instalments of $5,000 over four years.  Richard said the money will help him follow his dream across the world, giving him the chance to study in New York, London and Florence.

"I'm so thankful to Perth for always throwing up opportunities like this to me and to other singers," he said.

The Sir Robert William Askin Operatic Scholarship is open to male opera singers aged between 18 and 29 and is awarded every two years to applicants who show outstanding ability and promise in their field.
