The students enjoying China

The students enjoying China

Six ECU engineering students recently got the chance to experience engineering from an international perspective, completing a study tour at one of ECU’s partner institutions in China.

The School of Engineering students travelled with Associate Professor Laichang Zhang to Shanghai University of Electron and Power (SUEP) in China for the inaugural two-week program at the end of 2012.

“We got to learn a lot about the culture of China,” ECU student Chin Pok Yap said.

“With Chinese descent, I got a chance to learn even more about my own culture from the birthplace of my great-grandfather.”

During the program the students explored various tourist hotspots, including the Chinese Acrobatics Show and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai.

“The engineering students were very impressed with the visit,” Professor Zhang said.

“Overall, the entire program surpassed all the expectations, especially for the hotspots and delicious foods. Several students regretted not tasting more Chinese foods.”

The group also played sport withChinese students and visited all SUEP campuses, several labs, a manufacturing plant and attended 12 lectures on Chinese culture.

“It was a very worthy trip, allowing me to learn something new and to extend my knowledge beyond what I’ve already known,” said Chin Pok.

Professor Heping Tu, the Dean of international exchange and cooperation office at SUEP, was pleased with the visit and hoped 20 SUEP staff would visit ECU this year.

“ECU and SUEP are great partner institutes,” he said.

“I hope ECU students and staff could visit SUEP, and we could visit ECU yearly.”
