Nobel Laureate to shed light on crystal revolution

Nobel Prize-winning chemist Professor Dan Shechtman will deliver the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Oration on 11 March 2016 as part of ECU’s 25th anniversary celebrations

Professor Shechtman will speak about his discovery of a new type of crystal which revolutionised the field of cyrstalography. His work was recognised with the awarding of the 2011 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

But his 1982 discovery of quasi-periodic crystals (QC) took some time to be widely accepted by the scientific community.

“In fact it took almost a decade for QC order to be accepted by most crystallographers,” Professor Shechtman said.

“The paradigm that all crystals are periodic has thus been changed. It is clear now that although most crystals are ordered and periodic, a good number of them are ordered and quasi-periodic.”

Professor Shechtman is the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and the Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University.

His talk will outline how he made his discovery, the importance of the electron microscope as a discovery tool and the challenges in changing the scientific status quo.
