Edith Cowan University Photomedia graduate, Claire Martin has recently won a Magnum Photos Workshop Scholarship for her work submitted in FotoFreo 2010: The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography.
Forty-five applicants applied for the scholarship with Claire managing to secure one of the three scholarships on offer with her winning piece which outlined the poverty and addiction in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside.
After graduating from a Bachelor of Communications and Photomedia at ECU in 2004, Claire has successfully made her mark in the photographic world and has since been selected as an “Emerging Talent” for Reportage by Getty Images. She was also asked to represent Australia's Emerging Female Photojournalist by the Board at FotoFreo, and currently has a solo exhibition at the FotoFreo 2010 festival.
“The ECU Photomedia course taught me the key elements to be a successful photographer,” said Claire.
“The broad scope of the ECU Photomedia course forced me to master many different styles with which I continue to draw on in my work today”.
“It was inspiring to be at a University that caters to creative industries and to have access to all the latest technical equipment and quality professional guidance.”
As part of the scholarship, Claire has been offered a place on the Magnum Workshops Fremantle, which documents local interest stories about Fremantle and the surrounding area. The workshop will culminate in a projection of participant work at the Fremantle Arts Centre as part of the festival opening night celebration on 19 March, and the production of a group photographic book.
