Hi all. We're busy as usual, with assignments and the semester break coming up. Spring has arrived and with that, we're coming out of a dormant period and organising some social events. I know most of you wonder what we've been up to. Apart from trying to get offices, computers, shelves, meetings and the usual things we do, we've also been trying to recruit more people to get involved and come on board. Suffice to say, we've got a few more members now to take over those that left, but we can always do with more! In any case, come by to the events and talk to us. We'll give you all the juicy details. If you want to get in touch with us sooner, email us at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au We'd love to hear from you!

A few people asked about the bulletin boards. Here's one of them - http://pub39.ezboard.com/becuisc. The others require we run them on our own servers with cgi, php, sql. While we would love that, presently, ECU doesn't allow us the capability to do so - sigh! So, we can only look at using what's available (the existing bulletin board), or an off-site host. Let us know what you think by posting on the new board, or just pop by to have a look. It's up to you. :)

Hello everyone! We're still alive. :) In the coming weeks and months, we will be putting in and finishing up more of the content that this website is supposed to have and may be transforming it into more of an information portal where content is evergreen and doesn't get out of date so often. (like this update page!) This is because the number of students who are volunteering are getting busier by the day, and finding less time to commit to ECUISC, much less update an entire website. We're also trialing a few bulletin board systems which we feel are much nicer than the present one on the Student Portal. We hope the Bulletin Board will become the primary focus, where students can help one another, if we're unavailable. Anyway, more details will follow, but if there are people who are interested in volunteering their time, or want to know more about this organisation, email us or give us a ring. Our contact details can be found here.
Untitled - Thursday, 7 February 2002
It's just about the start of another semester. Orientation for international students is tomorrow. (see you there!) You'd all have noticed by now that the last update was just before the exams. Well, to be truthful, we've all been so busy over the holidays and haven't had time to update this page. We believe it's also the right of students to enjoy their well deserved break. :) We'll be getting back to recruiting new members to fill up the empty ones left behind by our graduating class. If you're interested, email us at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au
Throughout the holidays leading up to the start of semester, we've received tons of emails. Some meant for us, some unintended. Your emails would have either been answered or forwarded to the International Office (from the University). If not, we're probably onto it. A reminder to those sending us email: Questions about formal application procedures, course requirements etc. should be sent to iso@ecu.edu.au. ECUISC is a student representative organisation, so we don't handle administrative matters of the university.
Now that we've cleared that up, we'd just like to welcome the new students to ECU in 2002, and to our returning international students, we hope you've had a great holiday, welcome back!
Untitled - Friday, 19 October 2001
We have deferred the date of the AGM until further notice. 26th of October was a little tight for us to squeeze the event into, considering that many have their assignments due around that date. At this stage, the new date looks set to be approximately the week after the 26th or in early November. We will be putting notices up on campus, the International students bulletin board, via our email list and on this website.
Remember, if you're interested, send us an email now! :)
Untitled - Wednesday, 3 October 2001
Greetings fellow international students. As many will know by now (from the bulletin board), we had to cancel the excursion to the Perth Royal Show due to some unforeseen circumstances. It's been quite sad for us as well as for you, I'm sure. We actually had a number of students who saw our preliminary poster designs and asked us about them. Well, the lack of manpower to run the event was the main reason we cancelled it, as well as, the sudden deadline given to us by the Agricultural Society of WA to purchase our bulk discount tickets. A pity because a lot of work had already been done to plan and organise it. Imagine... $10 tickets and you wouldn't even have to queue for hours like the newspapers are reporting!
Well, afterall, it is the assignment season here at ECU and everyone is pretty busy. However, take heart, we are still trying to organise a couple of other small trips - a Cave & Canoe bushtucker tour and a Bigfoot tour (you know, the one where you surf down sand dunes?). Preliminary planning is done, we do need volunteers to run the event however. If you think you can afford to spend one Saturday of your time, drop us an email at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au.
In other news, nominations will open soon for positions on the ECUISC Secretariat. Take a look at what positions are on the Secretariat in the about us - people section. Send us an email if you're interested in a position on the ISC. The Annual General Meeting is just around the corner, so don't hesitate.

Dear friends, no doubt many of you will know about the devastation that has struck in New York by now. The ECU International Students Council regrets the loss of life and the distress this has caused worldwide. We wish to offer our condolences to those in our community affected by this tragedy, and to say that we'll be here to offer our support to any who may require it.
Being Multicultural Week, we also wish to remind everyone to be understanding of the differences we have in cultures, and to better appreciate our lives and the loved ones we have, and not succumb to any premature reactions or accusatory hype. We also note that there have been reports in Australia of attacks against the Muslim community, and we wish to remind all international students to take their personal safety seriously. Use campus security if you need to, they're there for you.
Once again, we offer our united sympathy and support in this trying time to the international student community here at ECU.
Untitled - Friday, 31 August 2001
Oh friends! What news we have for you. It has been an entire month since the last update. We're busy - so busy we haven't had much time to update you on the website. We really need a full-time web administrator. Anyone interested? Contact us at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au.
Anyway, we had an International & Exchange Student Gathering at Mount Lawley Student Housing two weeks ago. The turnout was good and I'm sure everyone who attended will agree - the food better! However, logistical requirements and the lack of support up at Joondalup will not see us repeating it there, not this semester anyway. The pictures for the gathering will be out soon, as will other pictures. Isn't this website drab and dreary without pictures? We'll try to make this site nicer, but we're also redesigning the site for the official launch during the Annual General Meeting on 12th of October.
Multicultural Day @ ECU
And now, on to the BIG Event! As you all know, Multicultural Day @ ECU will be held on Wednesday, 5th of September at ECU Mt Lawley.
It's in the gazebo area in front of the Student Guild. Here's what you can expect:
- Food will cost no more than $5 per stall.
- An entire day of cultural stalls from 11am - 4pm.
- Cultural performances from 12pm to 1.30pm.
- Food & drinks from Taiwan, Scandanavia, El Salvador, India, Spain, Sri Lanka, Malaysia & more!
- Performances from Eastern Europe, Latin America, Botswana, Australia and more!
- Stalls from Japan, Cuba, Australia and more!
So, drop by, have lunch, watch some cultural performances and enjoy your Wednesday. The event is FREE and is for everyone - students, staff, the general public. It is our contribution to the Western Australia Multicultural Week 2001 Celebrations. See you there
Untitled - Wednesday, 1 August 2001
This is going to be a long update. As you'll notice, the website is still undergoing a redesign. It's quite messy. If anyone likes to deal with HTML and Design, join the ISC and come give us a hand. Also, we'll be having a meeting this Saturday at Dome Cafe in Northbridge. The details are as follows:
Venue: Dome Cafe, Northbridge, Perth (cnr of Lake St and James St)
Date: Saturday, 4 August 2001
Time: 10am - 12pm
Contact: PY (0411 605 456) or email ecuisc@ecu.edu.au
We're opening this meeting up to all students (int'l and non) who are interested in actively participating in the ISC - organising activities, events etc. This is one step more involved than just attending our events and believe me, it's worth it! :) The friends you make, the things you learn, the incentives you get.
Also, we've been asked kindly by the people down at the library to inform you about this. You'll know about our stand on the library hours (you don't? go to the news page and read it), as well as what the Guild has to say about it on the bulletin board. Point to note though. The hours are still being monitored, so if we want our library to keep those hours and perhaps extend it, we've to start using the library more regularly.
LIBRARY HOURS
Library hours have been extended to 9.30 pm closing Monday-Thursday on all metropolitan campuses for Semester 2.
Library Opening Hours 23 July- 23 November, 2001
Churchlands, Joondalup, Mt Lawley

REMOTE ACCESS TO LIBRARY DATABASES
WAM (Web Access Management) is a new Library service for ECU staff and students that allows remote access to library databases using your own ISP (Internet Service Provider). For instructions on how to set up WAM see the Library home page at
http://www.cowan.edu.au/library/
NEW LIBRARY WORKSTATIONS
The Library, with the assistance of IT, is in the process of replacing all its public workstations. The new workstations will be much faster and more dependable than the old ones.
PRINT CHARGING
The Library is in the process of installing charging devices for printing from Library workstations. The system, using a Copyplus card, is the same that is used to charge for photocopying.
Charging is at the rate of 11 cents per page. Of course, students still have the option of emailing documents to themselves, thus saving on printing costs.
Untitled - Sunday, 15th July 2001
A big WELCOME to all our incoming fellow international students. Orientation was good, and for those of you who didn't go for the dinner at Saigon and the after-dinner activities at Pallas, you missed out! We've got some pictures which we'll put up when they're developed.
Just a note for people who come to this site thinking we're speaking for the University - we aren't. We're international students representing international students. We'll try to make this clearer as we go through the contents of the site. If you want to speak to the University, the people you want will be at ECU International. Check out the links section for access to their website. If you email us, and we can't answer it, we'll redirect it to them of course (so it's not going to get lost).
We're still working on getting the news scripts up. It's quite troublesome as we have to email the scripts to the uni web administrator before they are installed, so we're trying to find alternate solutions. Sorry for the inconvenience.
By the way, the next meeting of the ECUISC will be held 2 weekends after uni reopens. You will be informed on the bulletin board and via the mailing list. This is a special meeting as we'll be welcoming new students on board who are interested in finding out what we do and wish to play a part in the organisation. More details to come next week.
Untitled - Friday, 18th May 2001
Just a quick update here. We've got the cgi-bin access and we're working with the University Web Server Administrator to sort out the problems we're having with the news script. It is a bother when we can't get the access to sort these problems ourselves. The mailing list forms are also now sent via the web, so you don't have to worry about sending them via email.
We're also working on some projects for Orientation 2, 2001. So, watch this space for more news when they become available. Exams are around the corner and everyone is busy with assignments, so best wishes to all. To the new students coming to ECU next semester, we're looking forward to meeting you.
If you've any questions or feedback, just post it on the bulletin board. We'll answer them there, or you can email us directly at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au.
Untitled - Tuesday, 10th April 2001
For those of you visiting this site regularly, we do apologise for the seeming lack of activity. We're trying to get the site reorganized and putting the news right up front is a priority, as is making the process of inputting news much easier for the secretariat (the group of students who volunteer in the ECUISC). We are currently faced with some problems getting access to a cgi-bin, so do bear with us. In the meantime, we're always checking and posting information on the bulletin board.
Further to this, the Student Guild is getting their website up and running, and Virtual Campus is undergoing major reworks, so we're seeing how the bulletin board will fit into our dissemination of information to you. The events page in the about section is also updated.
If you'd like to volunteer your time to assist ECUISC in anyway, please contact us
Cut in Library Hours (update) - Mon, 19 Mar 2001
This update clarifies the position we have regarding the change in library hours and to provide you with more information regarding the issue. Firstly, the change being experienced on campus libraries are the proposed hours being tried by the University. This is by no means final until a consultative process returns its recommendations. The consultative process will be conducted via a series of student focus groups selected at random from the campuses affected, separate sessions for staff, and with various university committees. ECUISC sits a number of these committees, and we will be submitting our views to the university regarding the proposed change. We strongly urge you to voice your views so this can form part of our submission. To get in touch with us, head on to our contact page.
The rationale behind the change is in part a decline in funding provided to Australian Universities as well as increases in technology and infrastructure costs. Over 20% of the library allocation is expended toward the collection and expansion of library resources, and trends from the student service centre indicate that there is a preference toward online resources. The implementation of online material and duplication of information from digital form to paper form has proved more costly for the university. The challenge for the university is to determine how to allocate and utilise its current resources most effectively.
While the university appreciates that there is a sense of frustration, as there appears to be a decline in the level of services offered, significant progress has been made on extending online and off-campus services in recent years. Use of online databases has doubled in the past two years. In addition, the university participates in inter-library lending activities and is implementing a project to enable the electronic passing of information between participating libraries.
Cut in Library Hours - Mon, 19 Mar 2001
The University has recently proposed cutting library opening hours. We feel that this greatly affects the quality of the services being provided to students - both International and non-International. ECUISC will be submitting our views to the University regarding this and we are canvassing for your opinions to be included in our submission. If you have anything to say, drop us an email at ecuisc@ecu.edu.au with the subject Cut in Library Hours. [Go]
All your base... - Mon, 19 Mar 2001
Have you received your ISO newsletter? Did you see the insert that was the ECUISC newsletter? Were you wondering what All your base are belong to us meant? If your answer to all 3 questions are yes, then read on.
All your base are belong to us is a meme - not just any meme, it's currently the hottest one around. A meme (pronounced meem) as coined by Richard Dawkins,in his book The Selfish Gene is defined as "simply a unit of intellectual or cultural information that survives long enough to be recognized as such, and which can pass from mind to mind." To put it another way, it's an information pattern that replicates by altering changes in people's behaviour causing them to propagate the pattern. Remember the Whassup? ads by Budweiser? Remember the dancing baby? Remember the infectious hamster tune? Need I go on?
All this brings us to the question, why? Well, ECUISC needed an attention grabbing headline for one. We wanted one that would spark off your curiosity and to get you to come to this website - the one that serves you. Now that you're here, how about taking a look around and giving us your feedback? Oh, and if you want to find out more about the meme, just search the web for All your base are belong to us. :-) [Go]
Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) Update - Tue, 27 Feb 2001
In Campus Review this week, it's been reported that with the election of a Labour government, one of the promises will be to repeal anti student union legislation. Finally! With VSU, student organisations faced a severe lack of funds and that in turn took its toll. We need look no further than the problems our Guild faced last year. With VSU hopefully being repealed comes with it advantages and disadvantages. Students will have to pay a compulsory amenities fee - yes, compulsory. On the flipside, those same funds will hopefully allow student organisations to provide services like cheaper drinks in the pub, better and cheaper food in the cafeteria, subsidies, and a whole range of other services to the student population. We won't stop pursuing this until we see the legislation repealed. We'll keep you updated, of course!
Campus Review is Australiasia's Higher Education and Training Newspaper. The online version is subscription based, so no links to the article unfortunately, just a link to the site. However, there are locations on ECU campuses where Campus Review is provided free. We'll let you know once we know where they are. [Go]

Join the ECUISC - Tue, 13 Feb 2001
ECUISC needs the support of its members to be successful. We are currently rebuilding after the past few years of inactivity. While most of our work is student representation, there are also opportunities for networking and socializing - especially through our affiliates. This is a great way to enjoy the full international education experience. Send us an email today, and we'll get in touch with you. [Go]
