Laptop Inspection and Recovery System
An easy to use, bootable CD capable of verifying or refuting ownership of a suspect laptop
Laptop theft is of major concern for both individuals and businesses and the security of their personal or business sensitive information. It is estimated that over 50,000 laptops are stolen each year, and whilst a large number of these are recovered by police each year, the majority are never returned to their legitimate owners due to a lack of identifying information.
LIARS will allow an individual with limited knowledge of computers or forensic methods to identify the registered owner of a laptop whilst maintaining its forensic integrity. Initially this will occur on a superficial level meaning if the drive has been formatted no identifying information is likely to be found, however subsequent development by the Security Research Centre at ECU will allow retrieval of information from a formatted drive.
