The former Vario Health Institute has been renamed as the Edith Cowan University Health and Wellness Institute.
The Edith Cowan University Health and Wellness Institute will build on the Vario Health Institute’s track record of research in chronic disease prevention and management. To differentiate the Institute, the concept of ‘exercise prevents’ will be a defined thread throughout activities and research in the Institute.
The scope of the Institute’s focus will be broadened beyond the existing suite of chronic diseases, to incorporate key National Health Priority Areas which contribute significantly to the burden of illness and injury, and which have potential for health gains and reduction in the burden of disease.
The Wellness Clinic will continue to serve as the vehicle to deliver evidence-based wellness programs and integrated consulting and assessment services across the disciplines of exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, psychology, physiotherapy, nursing and occupational therapy. In the past year the Clinic recorded over 20,000 client and patient contacts. Each week, the Clinic provides integrative health services to some 500 people, most attending two or more sessions per week.
Adopting the new proposed name reflecting broader focus to key National Health Priority Areas, provides a stronger alignment with the Institute’s point of difference: exercise combined with lifestyle advice prevents a number of disabling medical conditions and reduces the incidence of various chronic diseases as well as deterioration and exacerbation of established conditions.
